How we remember and Why we forget

Today in class we:
-Reviewed the 3 box model of memory
-Retook the quiz on Memory
-Did a jigsaw activity about how we remember things and how we for get things.

Here is a video of me explaining the 3 box model for you to review. If you are still struggling with this, watch it a few times.

Make sure you keep up on your reading: You should be up to page 120 in Housekeeper and the professor by Friday

A copy of the notes from class today, make sure you have thoughts in the right column for each row:
Proactive and Retroactive Interference
What is it?

Forgetting that occurs when recently learned material interferes with the ability to remember similar material stored

How can we use it to improve our memory?
Cue dependant Forgetting
What is it?

The inability to retrieve information stored in memory because of insufficient cue for recall

How can we use it to improve our memory?
State- dependant forgetting
What is it?

The tendency to remember something when the rememberer  is in the same physical or mental state as during the original learning experience

How can we use it to improve our memory?

Smell oranges when studying, then drink OJ before the test
Psychogenic and traumatic Amnesia
What is it?
The partial or complete loss of memory for important personal information

How can we use it to improve our memory?
Automatic vs. Effortful Encoding
What is it?

Turning things we hear and see into images and ideas in our mind

How can we use it to improve our memory?

Effortful encoding is also known as STUDYING
Mnemonics
What is it?

Strategies and tricks for improving memory, such as a verse of formula

How can we use it to improve our memory?

Make up songs or abbreviations to make information more manageable- PEMDAS
Maintenance vs. Elaborative Rehearsal
What is it?

Maintenance- Rote repetition of material in order to maintain its availability in memory

Elaborative-Association of new information with already stored knowledge

How can we use it to improve our memory?

When note taking, try to connect to previous material
Deep Processing
What is it?

In the encoding of information, the processing of meaning rather than simply the physical or sensory features of a stimulus

How can we use it to improve our memory?

Try to break down words to their parts and what each part means
Decay Theory
What is it?

The theory that information in memory eventually disappears if it is not accessed, it applies more to short-term than long term memory

How can we use it to improve our memory?

Repeat important information in your mind or on paper often
