EMOTIONS AND MUSIC

The major emotions of life: Joy, Excitement, Surprise, Love, Disgust, Fear, Contempt, Guilt, Anger. These are not particular easy to define. Culture shapes how and why we feels them, individual experience shapes how, why, when we experience them. Everyone’s experience of these emotions can be very different. Musicians often use emotion as a creative force when writing and creating music. Your job is to think about some of your favorite music and match it with the universal emotions of being human.

For each emotion identify a song that appropriately expresses that emotion. You must describe in a single sentence how the song does this. (Look below for examples) *No explicit words in song titles please.

The more explain the song the more likely it is that you will get full credit (SEE RUBRIC BELOW)

FEAR	“Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood, it tells how a man can be worthless after he doesn’t care about a woman’s feelings.
GUILT	“All By Myself” by Celine Dion, to me this song represents the guilt of not being strong and letting negative memories take over.
ANGER	“Misery Business” by Paramore, the strong sound of the guitar in this song reminds of an angry moment.

YOUR EMOTIONS AND MUSIC ASSIGNMENT SHOULD INCLUDE:

To receive full credit your assignment must have all items listed below	Point value
STRUCTURE- An organized list, your name, a title, and no spelling errors.	10 points
COMPLETENESS- All 9 emotions are present and have both a song and explanation.	10 points
EXPLANATION- Your explanation shows an understanding of the nuance of this particular emotion. It shows me that you have thought about this connection. Also there is a concrete detail in each explanation “the music sounds angry” is not good enough.	10 points
CREATIVITY- Each response is unique, i.e. they aren't all the same artist, each explanation is not the same	10 points
TOTAL	40 points
